Agriculture

The already medieval agricultural tools that farmers of Tigray use to cultivate their extremely small pieces of land and harvest their products have been destroyed during the 2 year war and their oxen (mainly used to pull their tillage mechanism) were slaughtered to feed the invading soldiers or are just shot to death. SIMUR Technologies envisions to help our farming community in Tigray to be transformed and fundamentally change their practice of farming by transferring technologically advanced and viable options and by enhancing innovations in Tigray.

The Need

  • Tools used to till the land, harvest and thresh, and in some areas grind the grains are extremely backward and now destroyed. Hence, mechanization of farming practice is highly needed to quickly bring Tegaru farmers to their feet.
  • The youth of most farming families of Tigray who were capable of farming have either joined Tigray army, killed in action or killed by invading forces while they were at home or have fled from their farming community to escape killing, hence skilled manpower is very scarce. Accordingly, there is a need for the existing agricultural practice to be changed fundamentally.
  • Farming is labor intensive and is mainly for subsistence. Farmers in Tigray need additional income to improve their livelihood.

Our Focus

  • Implement a Holistic approach to fundamentally change the practice of farming and water harvesting in Tigray farming community
  • Purchase and import advanced agricultural machines/tools to be distributed to farming communities in several rural areas of Tigray.
  • Establish farmers’ training facilities to equip farmers skills of assembling, operating and maintaining their farming machines,
  • Establish Agricultural Technology Centers where engineers/technologists will innovate/invent and develop agricultural tools/machines: tillage, harrowing, harvesting, threshing, water harvesting, etc.
  • Training farmers with DIY tools.
  • To transform farmers in Tigray from subsistence farming to higher yield farming that would bring substantial income to the farming household
  • To mechanize farming so that it won’t be labor intensive and would potentially send the farmers and their children to school.
